Reef Restoration Samoa

Postby lavonne111 on Fri Oct 02, 2009 12:18 pm

My husband is from Savaii Island, Samoa and after 35 years in the States is ready to return to his village of Auala where the coral reef of the Asau Harbor has suffered the attempts to establish a lumber industry there during the 1970-80. Our interest in Shellfish restoration there is of necessity as most of our young people end up in NZ, Aus or the US with no industry in our area now. Our dream is to revive mussels, clams and oysters there through learning about any modes of aquaculture which would be appropriate there. We would love to hear from anyone with similar experience or interest. We are just now setting up our website at "savaii.org" and the article "Who's idea was this anyway?" has more details about our project plans.
We would like to tour a shellfish hatchery near Seattle during October but have not been able to determine if the Taylor facility is open then. Any info on that would be great.
Thanks, Lynne
