Ducks Eating Your Clams?

Postby Ecologist on Tue Jun 16, 2009 9:43 pm

Several species of seas ducks can consume your Manila clam crop in a heart beat before it reaches harvest size. Netting or bags will protect them from this but netting can be a pain to maintain over the same crop over several years. The alternative? Cover your clam ground in Pacific oyster clusters. The birds don't like trying to get at your clams through the oysters. :geek:

Great idea, this is a prime example of how polyculture can be beneficial. Less gear and easier to maintain-sounds like a win-win. Plus then you get oysters and clams...you can never have too many yummy shellfish! :)
