Dear Fellow Shellfish Gardeners

Dear Fellow Shellfish Gardeners,

This forum was build for the free exchange of ideas between the many passionate shellfish gardeners who know the joy of time spent on their beach growing their own shellfish. This is meant to be a community project that will be owned and operated by and for the benefit of shellfish gardeners. Please dive in! If you would like to take a leadership role and moderate the forums, please contact the site administrators.

How we got started:
In the fall of 2008 the seed sale staff at Taylor Shellfish Farms conducted a survey to find out how to support the many loyal customers who were buying seed for shellfish gardening projects. Many gardeners responded to the survey and said they wanted more resources to learn about shellfish gardening and opportunities for gardeners to share information with each other. There were also some gardeners who said they wanted to form a club. The Taylor staff saw this as a great opportunity to get more people involved in water quality issues and to grow the shellfish gardening movement and in spring of 2009 they decided to build this forum and invite shellfish gardeners to get involved. So start posting and lets build this gardening resource together!

Some ground rules:

1.Share information freely. The whole point of this forum is to share information, build community and serve the shellfish gardening movement which we are all a part of.

2.Be proactive. Build forums as you want to see them. If you need help, contact a moderator or administrator.

3.Be respectful. Please recognize that the people who come to this forum do so because they love shellfish and the waters near their home.

4.Don’t use profanity. Moderators will be forced to delete you posts if you do, and possibly even revoke your membership.

5.If you have suggestions for other ground rules, post them and we can add them to the list

Happy Gardening,
-The Shellfish Gardening Crew

Hi. I just discovered the Shellfish Gardner website and signed up. I have been growing a few oysters in Grays Harbor Bay (Ocean Shores mud flats) for a few years now with modest success. I grown on ropes to stay above the mud and minimize loss from tidal currents. I am currently experimenting with clams seeded under a protective cover. I think the mud is causing a good bit of loss and maybe I have them in too deep water (about at the + 2ft water level). I look forward to learning from others.
